What mameru means
Mameru — known in parts of Gujarat asmosalu— is the tradition by which the mother’s brother and the maternal family honour their niece or nephew before marriage. It is one of the most heartfelt customs in a Gujarati wedding, carrying the love of a woman’s birth family into the life of her child.
How it is observed
The mama and maternal relatives arrive in celebration, bringing gifts for the bride or groom and their mother: traditional garments such as a saree or wedding outfit, jewelry and ornaments, sweets, and sometimes gifts for the household. The offerings are presented with ceremony and blessing, often accompanied by singing, music, and joyful gathering.
The bond it honours
At its heart, mameru celebrates an enduring tie — the love between a mother and her family, and the role of the mama as a giver, protector, and constant presence in the lives of his sister’s children. In giving, the maternal family reaffirms that this bond does not fade with marriage but is carried proudly into the next generation.
